Rotation of the Costa Concordia wreck in front of Isola del Giglio. Parbuckling or rotation took 18 hours, as the movement was extremely delicate and constantly monitored.
The parbuckling was performed using strand jacks which were tightening several cables attached to the top of the caissons and to the platforms, which were pulled seawards, while the cables attached to the starboard turrets was used for balancing.
This was very delicate phase, during which the forces involved have to be offset carefully to rotate the wreck without deforming the hull.
After that the water beginner to enter the caissons and the ship started to move more quickly until the complete rotation.
